ASI held a "Light Up Our Nights" rally October 4th to voice campus concerns about the city council voting against contributing to the cost of new lighting on Bellflower Boulevard, Atherton Street and Palo Verde Avenue streets.
The city council re-allocated the $133,000 that was needed to help with the lighting project on the streets surrounding CSULB. The money is going to be spent on after school programs, halloween parties and a snow day for the city. City Councilman Gary DeLong, University President F. King Alexander and Campus Police Chief Jack Pearson were all present at the gathering.
"Councilman Patrick O'Donnell made a motion to reallocate the lighting money toward other programs," said Mark Andrews "There was an 8-1 vote, with Councilman Gary DeLong being the person that voted for us."
Students that attended the event expressed their worries about campus safety. But the rally itself did not have a very big turnout. There were maybe 50-60 people there and that includes the ASI staff that had to attend .
The rally was held from 12pm to 2 pm in front of the University Bookstore. ASI had a banner that said on it "Light Up Our Nights" and asked all who attended the rally to sign it. With the banner held up the students marched around campus.
